Hey everyone, it’s David! Let’s talk about money. But not the numbers and spreadsheets (although those are important too).
Today, I want to get real about the emotional side of money – our money mindset and how it impacts our spending habits.
For years, I was a champion retail therapist. A bad day? Retail therapy! Feeling stressed? Retail therapy! It felt like a quick fix, but the high never lasted.
The guilt and regret that followed were a constant drain.
Breaking the Cycle:
I knew I had to break free from this unhealthy cycle.
Here’s what helped me:
- Identifying Triggers: I started tracking my spending and emotions. It was eye-opening to see how often I turned to shopping to cope with negative feelings.
- Challenging Money Beliefs: I realized I had limiting beliefs about money, like “I don’t deserve to spend money on myself.” I challenged these beliefs and focused on positive affirmations like “I am worthy of financial abundance.”
- Finding Healthy Alternatives: I replaced retail therapy with healthier coping mechanisms. Exercise, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing hobbies became my go-to stress relievers.
Building a Healthy Money Mindset:
It wasn’t easy, but slowly, my relationship with money started to change.
Now, I see money as a tool to empower my life, not a source of stress.
Here are some tips that helped me:
- Practice Gratitude: Focusing on what I’m grateful for (financial and non-financial) shifted my perspective from scarcity to abundance.
- Set Financial Goals: Having clear goals, like saving for a vacation or a down payment, motivated me to make conscious spending decisions.
- Celebrate Milestones: Reaching financial goals, no matter how small, deserves a celebration! This reinforces positive money behaviors.
Your Money Journey:
Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to financial wellness. The key is to understand your relationship with money and find strategies that work for you. Be patient, be kind to yourself, and most importantly, don’t be afraid to seek help if needed.
